Chapter Eleven
“Thank you, Carla. I appreciate any help you can give me,” Bieito said after explaining to her why he needed the information.
“I’m not sure how much help I can be, Ben, and you do realize I’m going to have to report this to my supervisor? I’ll get a reprimand for it as well, since I did it without their permission.” Carla’s unhappiness could be heard over the phone and Bieito wished he hadn’t had to involve her.
Bieito wandered around the bedroom he’d ducked into to make the call. “I know, honey, and I’m so sorry to ask you for this. I didn’t have anyone else to turn to.”
Well, he did, but he wasn’t about to get Pablo and Mac mixed up in the problem. They were already walking a thin line by not reporting Pablo’s relationship to Victor. If the Feds found out Mac—or Pablo—had helped them, they would end up in jail just as fast as Bieito and Victor would.
“I know your boss though, and if you explain who this information was for, he’ll let it go,” he informed her, having already discussed it with the man above her. It helped to have several government agents on the payroll. He hadn’t told the man who he was contacting, just that he was getting some files on the Cortez cartel and whoever came to inform him about it wasn’t to get in trouble. Hell, Bieito made sure his bribes were higher than they could get elsewhere.
“You know my boss? Just who the hell are you, Ben?” She sounded annoyed now.
His laugh was filled with disgust at himself. “Trust me. You don’t want to know the truth, Carla. Plus it’s better if you don’t. Plausible deniability. It might help you in the end, though I promise if you do, I’ll make sure you have the best lawyer in the country.”
“That’s supposed to reassure me?” She huffed. “Never mind. I’m sending you all the files we have on the Cortez cartel and what we know about their movements in Arizona. There are other files from the DEA. Looks like they’ve had that particular place under surveillance for a year or so too.”
Relief rushed through him for a few seconds. He hated going into any situation blind, and they wouldn’t have time to do any kind of recon of the area. Time was running out for Kemen, and Bieito didn’t want to think of how Victor would react if his son was murdered.
“Thank you again, honey, and if there’s ever anything I can do for you, don’t hesitate to ask me. I’m in your debt.”
“You are, and when I lose my job for this, I expect you to support me for the rest of my life.”
“Deal.” He would do it because he did understand exactly what he’d asked her to do for him. It wasn’t like he didn’t have more than enough money to support her and himself if he were to stop working for the cartel right then and there. “I have to go.
